The Butterfly’s Journey: Finding Strength and Hope Through Life’s Transformations

The butterfly starts its life as an egg. When it hatches, it is a round, green caterpillar that crawls on its belly and munches its way across a leaf. Four times in its life, it sheds its skin to cover its growing body. The fifth time, it sheds its caterpillar skin for the last time, revealing the soft chrysalis underneath. The chrysalis soon hardens, protecting the caterpillar as it changes inside.
Some parts of the caterpillar break down and are reused as nourishment while it changes, but many structures are remodeled rather than destroyed. Its breathing tubes, digestive system, eyes, and other body parts are reshaped into forms that will support its new life as a butterfly. Small groups of cells grow and unfold into adult butterfly parts, including the wings, legs, antennae, and eyes. The chrysalis opens, and the butterfly emerges into its new life. We see it and call it a butterfly, but it is a transformed caterpillar.
We go through trials during life. We struggle with pain and loss. But we are not destroyed. On the other side of the pain lies a new life. It will be a different life, but we may discover strengths and abilities we did not know were lying quietly inside us.
