Every Life Matters

I shared this memory two years ago.
As Lee’s heart failure advanced, he often struggled with feelings of discouragement and questioned his impact on the world. But, during his years of service to our country, this Air Force veteran was decorated for actions that saved lives. During the Vietnam Conflict, Lee served as a boom operator (an in-flight refueling technician). One night, a fighter jet approached for refueling. Unfortunately, Lee’s boom pod light, which had been working when they left base, burned out. The incoming jet’s receptacle light was not operational either. With the Pilot's permission, Lee coached the fighter plane into position and then onto the extended boom. This was a high-risk maneuver, but both Lee and his crew knew that without the fuel, the troops on the ground would not have air cover. Lee was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism.
While this was the most spectacular refueling mission, there were many, many others in his 18 years as a boom operator. And yet, on difficult days, Lee forgot how many lives his courage touched, including strangers who survived because of him. Remembering these moments brought comfort amid grief.
You may have days when you are discouraged. I encourage you to recall and share times when your actions made a difference; doing so can inspire both yourself and others.
